A Company Is Its Data

In today's highly technical economy, information is more valuable than ever. Disaster recovery plans should always include a cohesive data recovery plan and/or disaster recovery software to get your business back online as soon as possible. Your risk assessment plan should address questions about the state and importance of information technology in your business.

How dependent is your company on IT?

Consider asking each employee whether or not they could do their job without a computer, network and internet connection, and access to previous data. Remember, while equipment can be replaced, data can be lost forever. The most important aspect to a good data recovery plan is an in-depth analysis of your company's reliance on data and technology. Take inventory of communications at your office:

  • Does your business consist of multiple offices? If so, analyze how they are linked.
  • Do you use copper wires, fiber-optics, or satellite connectivity? Try to work as much redundancy into the system as possible.

Data Back-up

Having a proper back-up system for important data is crucial. Consider using a RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives) system to supplement your network server. Use multiple tapes and swap them out regularly. The best data recovery plans should call for daily back-ups at the close of the business day, with verifications every morning.

Also, find a secure off-site location for your server tapes.

  • A safety deposit box will do, as will a fire-proof safe in a secondary location.
  • Medium-to-large-sized companies should look into more adequate storage options.

A detailed data recovery plan is one of the most important steps in protecting your business form any emergency, from cyber-crime to a level V storm. Still, data recovery will not ensure business continuity in the aftermath of a catastrophe. How else can you protect your business from disaster?
